Wine for the fun and love of it

Tags Bar

On my day off, usually on Wednesday, I have the good fortune of living near Sweet 16th bakery in East Nashville, and Dan sharing his copy of the New York Times Food Section. Of course I only read the New York Times food section after I’ve finished the Tennessean food section. (support local first) On April 11, in the Times, Eric Asimov wrote an article about learning to taste wine, and it described how I was introduced to wine tasting. I started going to Village Wines and at some point started asking for the owner to pick out the wine for me. At some point I asked him to give me a case of 6 white and 6 red that costs $240. There would be $10 bottles and $40 bottles. It always felt like an adventure and a reason to get my wine lovers companion out to see what I was drinking. Eventually I got to know Hoyt Hill and he asked me why I didn’t do the wine list at the restaurant I worked at. My reply was that the chef didn’t do that. He asked why, and I didn’t have an answer. Needless to say, it started a romance with wine that will last a lifetime and the beginning of an education that will never be completed. I’ve lived in Florida and New York, and had the good fortune to travel a bit, and I really believe we have the hardest working most passionate wine retailers ever. Which ever retailer you choose to purchase from, get to know someone in the store, and let them get to know your likes, ask them what they are excited about. The same with the wine folks and servers at your favorite restaurant, give them a price range and ask them what they are excited about , alot of times you’ll get a gem. We have alot of great restaurants in town with terrific wine, I’m really jacked to see what makes them excited that is different from what I’m serving. No matter what, relax and enjoy with friends, family or just enjoying your own company, but the key is to enjoy.
Cheers
